The midterms have consistently been good for the stock market since 1946. It hasn’t mattered who won or lost or which party controlled the White House or Congress. Whatever the results had been, the midterm election season has been an excellent one for stocks.
Since 1946, in years with midterm elections, the Standard & Poor’s 500-stock index has gained an astonishing 18.4% on average in the 9-month period Sept. 30 (so just ahead of the elections) through to June 30 of the following year. In that same period in non-voting years, the index gained only 4.9%.
